How to Sell Books on Amazon

To sell books on Amazon, simply create a selling partner account on Seller Central, choose a selling plan, provide the requested information and list the books that you want to sell.

The process for registering your account on the Amazon Italia store is described in detail below:
  1. Create a selling account
    If you do not have a selling partner account, you will need to create a new one on the official Seller Central page by clicking on the "Sign up" button and entering all the requested information, including an email address, password and telephone number. A video call with one of our operators will follow to verify your identity. If the verification is successful, you will receive a confirmation email notifying you that the account has been created.
  2. Select a selling plan
    After logging in to a selling partner account, you can choose whether to opt for an individual or professional account as needed.

    A professional account costs €39/month (excluding VAT), regardless of the number of units sold, plus referral fees; an individual account is free but a cost of €0.99 is charged per unit sold, plus referral fees.

    The professional selling plan is therefore suitable for those who aim to have a high number of orders every month.

    In addition to the economic advantage, a professional account allows you to use feeds and spreadsheets to manage inventory, as well as providing access to detailed reports. Finally, sellers with a professional account have the opportunity for their products to appear as a "featured offer" if the products are competitive compared to competing selling partners.

  3. Enter your crediting information
    The next step involves entering valid crediting information so you can receive compensation for the sale of your books.

    Once you have logged in to Seller Central with your new account, click on the "Settings" icon in the top-right corner and select "Account Information". On this page, in the "Payment Information" section, you will find "Bank Account Details" where you can assign the crediting methods for the countries in which you sell your books.

    At this point, you will only have to wait to receive an email confirming the validity of the account from Amazon.
  4. Publish your ads
    To list your books on Amazon, click on the menu in the top-left corner of the Seller Central home page and select "Catalogue" > "Add products". On this page, you will find a search bar where you can search for your book by entering its title or ISBN. Make sure that you always select "Books" as a category filter. Once you have identified the book, click on "Sell this product" to create your ad.
  5. Set a selling price
    Now that the ad is created, all that's left is to decide what price to sell the book at by entering the value in the corresponding field.
    If the book is already available on Amazon, a good way to choose the right price is to check the prices set by other ads for the same product. Inexperienced selling partners are advised to set a price lower than the competition to encourage customers to buy their book.

    In the description of the book for sale, you must enter the condition of the book itself as it is possible to sell both new and used books.

    You will also need to enter a brief description of the condition and indicate if it has a hard cover or not.

    The guidelines clarify the condition of a used book, from "Like New" to "Acceptable".
    A book can only be sold as "New" if it has never been touched or read.
    A book is "Like New" only if it gives the impression that it has never been opened before. The outer part must be intact without tears. The cover must not be creased and the pages must be completely clean and intact.

    A book is in "Very Good" condition if the pages and cover are intact and clean and if the binding is not damaged. The pages may show slight signs of wear and tear.
    A book is in "Good" condition if the pages and cover are intact. The binding may show minor signs of wear and tear and the pages may include some highlighting. The book may also have a bookstore label.

    A book is "Acceptable" if the pages and cover are intact. Pages can include notes and highlighting that don't obscure the text. The binding may have ripples, but it must be strong and intact.

    If a book is "Unacceptable", it cannot be sold on Amazon. A book is "Unacceptable" if any pages are missing, the text is obscured, or the cover is torn.

    To complete the product choice, select the shipping method offered. Once the ad has been saved, the book will be on sale.

    Amazon also allows the sale of used books as long as their condition falls within the parameters described above. The process for creating an ad for a used book is exactly the same as that for a new book described above.

Fulfilment by Amazon

After following the steps described above to create a selling partner account and publish the book selling ad, it can be converted into an FBA ad.
On the Seller Central page, select "Manage All Inventory" under the "Inventory" section of your account.

Choose the book you want to convert by ticking the box next to it in the leftmost column.
Going to the "Edit" drop-down menu and select "Convert to Fulfilment by Amazon".
At this point, you will be directed to the conversion page. Clicking on the "Convert" button will change the ad. Check the instructions to complete your first shipment.
Amazon will provide you with a list of fulfilment centres. Choose the one closest to you and follow the instructions to send the book to that centre.
Amazon will generate product shipping labels for your books in PDF format. Print them out and attach them to the shipping package as indicated.

You can use Amazon's discounted shipping to send the books to the fulfilment centre. Alternatively, you can take advantage of the Merchant Fulfilled Network (MFN), a selling method that allows you to list your products on the Amazon store but manage the storage, shipping and customer service independently.

In some respects, this method may be more convenient, but you must always take into account the need for a suitable space for storing the books, which are otherwise likely to deteriorate and become damaged.

With Fulfilment by Amazon, as soon as the books are in the warehouses, the staff themselves will take care of packaging and shipping them. In addition, Amazon will always provide customer service, manage returns and send a package tracking number.

However, Fulfilment by Amazon involves costs that must be taken into account, especially if you have just started your business.

The first cost involved is for sending your first shipment from your business's pickup address to Amazon fulfilment centres. This first shipment is at your expense and if you request a pickup from Amazon, it will be credited to your Seller Central Account. With Fulfilment by Amazon, you only pay for the services you use.
There are no FBA subscription fees, contracts or minimum inventory requirements. You ship your books to the fulfilment centre, paying only for the handling services and storage space used. Italy has a fixed price policy for books that is valid throughout the country.
You can use this tool to calculate the profitability of your products sold with Fulfilment by Amazon.

All fees are deducted from the total amount paid by the buyer at the time of sale. The remaining amount, visible in the "Payments" section of the Reports tab in Seller Central, will then be credited to your bank account. An electronic invoice will be sent monthly by email, containing all fees or other amounts due.

If the books for sale are small, you can take advantage of Low-Price FBA for items with a maximum price of €12. The main objective of this programme is to reduce shipping costs.

To participate in the programme, the first step is to enrol in Fulfilment by Amazon. Once this is done, you will need to list the items that are eligible for the programme. Lastly, you will need to send the inventory to Amazon.

To be considered eligible for the programme, books must:
  • be new;
  • measure a maximum of 33 x 23 x 5 cm;
  • weigh no more than 225 g;
  • be priced at €10 or less.

Advantage Programme

Advantage is a programme that enables publishers, authors, musicians, filmmakers, studios and other media content creators to list their products on Amazon and reach millions of customers around the world. Advantage gives you access to tools to manage your own operations, marketing and reporting, as well as insights to help you maximise sales.

The specific requirements for participating in this programme are as follows:
  • The Selling Partner must hold the distribution rights for the titles they enrol in the programme
  • Each title enrolled must have a valid ISBN and a scannable bar code
The account to join Advantage requires the same information as the normal selling partner account, so you need to enter your name, email address, password, residence address and bank account number.

After enrolling a title, the new Selling Partner will receive an email with instructions on how to access and confirm the order.
  • To confirm your order, you will need to log in to your Selling Partner page and select the "Orders" tab. After clicking on the corresponding order ID number, you can confirm the order and receive the shipping information
  • Your Advantage account will not be fully active until you enrol a title
  • Every title must have an ISBN and each copy must have a valid bar code
Next, you'll need to print the shipping labels and packing slips. You can print them from the order confirmation page. The packing slip must be placed in the package along with the books you're sending and the shipping label must be placed on the outside of the package.

To finish, you'll need to send the copies to a fulfilment centre. Amazon will tell you which fulfilment centre to send the books to; the address will be on the shipping label.
However, please note that if you ship an order that does not meet the requirements, Amazon has the right to send it back to the sender at your expense.

You should also bear in mind that books in the Advantage programme are sold under the Amazon name and not under your selling partner name. You also won't receive feedback on purchases or the condition of books.
